NFT Chat: Aleyna Dogan

First of all, we would like to get to know you. And of course, there’s something we’re very curious about: At what point did you find yourself in the NFT world exactly? Was it a global transformation, did it happen with a project that attracted you or excited you?

Of course! I’m Aleyna, I’m an entrepreneur, writer, and photographer. I’ve been in the NFT space for over a year. I currently work at VaynerNFT and publish my newsletter NFTimes. I also assist couple of projects in the space. So I graduated from New York University last May. I was studying at Gallatin School, where I could craft my own major. I’ve always been interested in tech, so I studied tech, psychology, and philosophy. I ended up getting really interested in technology ethics (data privacy, decentralization, fake news, echo chambers, etc.)

I worked at a blockchain startup in the summer of 2019, where I learned the nits and grits of the technology. After leaving the world of blockchain to dive into philosophy more, in February 2021, I got introduced to NFTs. I was subletting the second bedroom in my apartment to a friend who was working in crypto, so through talks with him, I got fascinated. I literally read every day about NFTs for 4-5 hours for months to understand the technology and its possibilities. You know I saw all the top projects today launching, but $300 for an image was too much for me then. Only if I knew how quick it would get this crazy… But that’s the thing! It’s still early; there are unlimited opportunities in web3. That’s why I love it. There is so much room for anyone to join, learn, create, build, and make a name for themselves.

Your SubStack newsletter is a great resource for those entering the world of NFT. However, your first post can lead those who want to enter this world to pessimism. You said that usually it’s “too late” for those who want to enter this world. Are you still sure about this, or is it possible to get it together no matter what point we enter?

Thanks! My initial idea was to start a creative agency/consultancy to help artists. I quickly realized how complex NFTs were to a newbie and wanted to create a resource to help artists out and help them stand out by being part of the collective I imagined to build. I, unfortunately, didn’t have the resources and workforce to create that, but part of that was creating a weekly newsletter. So I started from where I knew I could. There really wasn’t a newsletter about NFTs, doing what I did when I started. I’ve been writing NFTimes since July. I also write for my friend Adam Levy, who has a podcast called Mint. I focus more on the creator economy for his publication, specifically DAOs and social tokens. Anyone can join the beautiful world of NFTs, and they should! My newsletter is aimed to ease the onboarding experience for NFT-curious people, be a cohesive update for NFT-natives, and respond to the “what is going on in nfts” question for non-NFT people.

SubStack bültenin, NFT dünyasına girenler için harika bir kaynak. Ancak ilk yazın bu dünyaya girmek isteyenleri karamsarlığa sürükleyebilir. Every day we hear about new projects from dozens of brands about NFTs. Do you think so many projects will lead to content garbage at some point?

Similar to the web2 boom, some people try to make a quick buck. But this doesn’t reflect the actual ethos of web3. Most projects will fail, but the ones who succeed will be the Disneys and Facebooks of the next generation of the internet.

What was the NFT project that excited you the most, or is there a project you are looking forward to?

Hmmm.. There are so many projects out there. I’ll say that my favorite 2 NFTs I own are from mfers and Crypto Chicks. The one I’d LOVE to have is a World of Woman. Missed the train on that one..

The world is now sharply divided in two. Those who believe, produce and follow NFTs. On the other hand, those who do not believe and say that it is a temporary trend. What would you like to say to those on the second side?

Hating NFTs is like hating PDFs. NFT in itself is a technology — it doesn’t have opinions. You can hate or love how people use it, but hating NFTs doesn’t make sense. Also, even if you do hate them, you probably won’t get to escape from them. I believe every person will own NFTs as we live more digitally. I mean, I believe NFTs will move beyond what we see right now. For example, I think all concert tickets will be NFTs. Makes perfect sense. They will focus more on utility rather than (or as much as) collectibility.

Also, look from this side: the largest companies in history are focusing on it. Facebook (now, Meta) is focused on the metaverse. Microsoft bought Activision Blizzard for $70B for metaverse hopes. (gaming nfts will be huge) Snap is first and foremost an AR company. You can see where trends are shifting.

There are many NFT Marketplaces. Do you believe a particular one is the best, or do you recommend NFT creators or collectors choose the platform that suits their needs?

I use OpenSea the most, but that’s because I don’t collect 1/1s that much. People love LooksRare since they can do some wash trading at the moment. I’m most excited about Coinbase NFT’s upcoming platform.

On the other hand, there is also the issue of MetaVerse. Do you think it will become a bigger trend? There is considerable hatred on the Internet against Metaverse.

Again, what does hating a technology that you can’t stop do? There are pros and cons with any new technology, but that tells more about us humans than the technology itself. Metaverse is both here (Decentraland, Somnium Space..) and also far away (fully immersive experiences). If you don’t understand metaverse, go talk to a gamer or someone younger than age 13. They care more about what their avatars wear than what they wear themselves. Metaverse is just another way we can interact with one another.

 What would you recommend to someone entering the world of NFT and Metaverse as a creator or collector? For example, a certain platform, terms or techniques that must be researched?

What do you think awaits us in 2022? For example, might certain limitations be waiting for us? Or we would like to receive your insights for important trends or new developments.

I’m most excited about music and fashion NFTs. Moving to ETH 2.0 will be important. We are in a bear market right now, but probably we’ll see another one. But who knows?! The world is unpredictable; NFT space is high-speed and basically 24/7, so anything could happen. The fast pace-ness of the space makes it both exciting and tiresome. If you are willing to dive in, it’s a pretty fun ride.
